Investigators were focused on meetings Kushner held with Russian officials last year as part of inquiry into Russian interference in 2016 election, sources said
White House senior adviser Jared Kushner said he would cooperate with any investigation into the Trump campaigns ties to Russia following reports that he is under FBI scrutiny. Multiple news outlets reported on Thursday that investigators were focused on a series of meetings that Kushner, Donald Trumps son-in-law, held with Russian officials last year as part of the inquiry into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Mr Kushner previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about these meetings, attorney Jamie Gorelick said in a statement on Thursday. He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry. The Washington Post first reported last week that investigators had identified a current White House official as a significant person of interest, a major development following the news that former FBI director Robert Mueller would be acting as a special counsel to investigate Trumps connections to Russia. Press secretary Sean Spicer did not deny the news reports at the time, and on Thursday, the Washington Post and NBC News reported that Kushner was a focus of the FBIs case, citing anonymous sources familiar with the investigation. The Guardian could not independently confirm the reports. The naming of Kushner in connection with the FBIs investigation is significant, though the scope of the inquiry into the husband of the presidents daughter, Ivanka Trump, is unclear. Kushner has not been accused of wrongdoing and is not the central focus of the investigation, the Post said. The White House did not comment further on Thursday. It emerged last year that executives of Vnesheconombank (VEB), a Russian bank, had talks with Kushner. The White House aide also held a meeting with Sergey Kislyak, the Russian ambassador to the US. Former national security adviser Michael Flynn resigned in February after it emerged that he had misled vice-president Mike Pence about the nature of his conversations with Kislyak. Kushner is currently being investigated because of the extent and nature of his interactions with the Russians, the Post reported. The FBIs investigation is also reportedly continuing to focus on Flynn and Trumps former campaign chairman, Paul Manafort, who has had extensive business dealings for Russian proxies in Ukraine. Manafort has denied wrongdoing. Flynn is facing subpoenas from the US House and Senate and has refused requests for documents by invoking his fifth amendment right against self-incrimination. Kushner is in a different category than Manafort and Flynn in the investigation, according to NBC News report. Last month, the New York Times reported that Kushner omitted meeting with Russians on security clearance forms. Earlier this month, Kushners family was forced to apologize for mentioning his name while urging Chinese investors to pour money into a US real estate project, raising concerns about a possible conflict of interest. Trump recently fired FBI director James Comey, later admitting he was he thinking of this Russia thing when he decided to sack him. Trump had also reportedly urged Comey to drop the investigation into Flynn. Acko is an under-the-radar startup that wants to disrupt Indias insurance industry through a digital-only model. This week it stuck its head above the parapet and announced that it has raised $30 million to get started on its bold plan. Founded by Varun Dua, the man behindinsurance comparison siteCoverfox, Acko is designed as a wholly digital take on insurance in India. The company isan independent general insuranceprovider that is wholly digital.Beyond operating online and without the expense of a brick and mortar footprint, Acko is aiming to unbundle insurance in India to make it both more affordable and relevant to consumers. India is a fairly nascent insurance market [with the same]traditional carriers that weve seen for decades, CEO Dua told TechCrunch in an interview. Acko will be the first internet-only carrier. Taking insurance in India online Inspired by models such as Lemonade and Oscar Health in the U.S. and Direct Line in the UK, Dua sees a huge opportunity to tap intodigital totake a shot at the current market which is estimated to be worth over $10 billion annually and reacha new segment of consumers who have been left out to date. The system ofdistribution in India does not provide information on the user at all. Theres not enough data to underwrite accurately on a real-time basis, Duasaid. Sales are mostly offline and flat pricing, usually [insurance firms] dont know much about a customer before underwriting him. The Acko CEObelieves his firm can offer a 30-40 percent discounton incumbents by pricing its policies more accurately by gatheringinformation and data online. Thats in addition to cost savings by operating without a physical presence. We will probably start off taking away existing [insurance rivals] customers, he added. Its a relatively easier market because people are moving online year on year. That gives us the early pickings, [but we] will probably be launching smaller and unique products that dont exist today later. In particular, he foresees opportunity around segment-specific insurance policies that can be sold online. That could include, for example, pregnancy insurance, or policies for ride-sharing companies. Beyond selling on the Acko website, the plan is to link arms with partners who already have relationships with consumers for example an e-commerce store selling baby items, or the ride-sharing firm itself. In a recent report, EY forecast that Indias insurance market is poised for a strong growth despite concerns around reaching new customers:
Despite strong improvement in penetration and density in the last 10 years, India largely remains an under-penetrated market. The market today is primarily dependent on push, tax incentives and mandatory buying for sales. There is very little customer pull, which will come from growing financial awareness and increasing savings and disposable income.
Thats a majorfocus for Acko.
We want to make insurance so straightforward that consumers dont need to talk to multiple people to get advice or fill up forms. Consumers should be able to access low prices in one click based on their risk profile, and be confident that at a press of a button their claim will get paid in the fastest possible time, Dua added in a statement. Big name backers and big plans To get started, Acko has raised $30 million from a range of top names that include VC firms Accel, SAIF Partners and Catamaran Ventures. Its angel investors include Venk Krishnan and Subba Rao of NuVentures, Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan, Hemendra Kothari of DSP Blackrock, founder and chairman of Hexaware Atul Nishar, and ex-investment baker and Arpwood Capital founder Rajeev Gupta. Beyond that, Dua teased that there are undisclosed global insurance groups that own a stake of the business. Their names wont be revealed for another month or so, but their presence has helped give the startup credibility in an industry that values corporate institutions. Acko has received an R1 license and is currently awaitingitsR2 license which has been applied for with Indiasinsurance authority. Dua anticipates that the final nod should come within three months, leaving the company ready to open its doors and launch products for consumers before the end of September this year. The initial plan is to be active in three or four cities until Acko has shown thatthe claims pieces is something we able to control and optimize, according to Dua. The team, which is currently around 20 people, is likely to grow to 45-50 by the year end, to help Dua hit his ambitious targets. We believe we should do close to $40 million in premiums over first year, Dua said. On a five-year perspective, we wouldlove to reach anything from $500 million in premiums. As an actor, Jeremy Griffith is used to being up in front of people, but one recent performance made him feel out of his depth: Standing before a five-judge panel, he had to make a business pitch. It's very foreign to most of the artists who try to get involved [in business,] Griffith said. Information to teach artists how to do this kind of stuff is a lot scarcer than for other businesses. Perhaps out of habit, he started his presentation with a joke: Despite our attire this afternoon, we're not a boyband from the 90s. We are a production company. Griffith and fellow actors Kevin C. Fredrick and Matthew McKay are the comedians behind Tri House Films. They've been putting video and podcast content online for about six months and now they want to translate sketch comedy for the world of virtual reality (VR). They were one of eight teams to pitch their business ideasat theCompetition for Creative Innovators, a new event at the California Institute of the Arts. Students and alumni presentedtheir business ideas for a chance at a $3,500 prize and a spot in a five-week incubator program, where they'll receive a mentor, funds to cover living expenses and a work space on campus. Though it would have been easy to call the event Shark Tank for artists, organizers at CalArts shied away from comparing the contest to the TV show on ABC, where cutthroat venture capitalists decide to back or embarrass business owners. Somebody came up with such a clever name for it:Dolphin Pool, said Rita Soultanian, director of career services at CalArts. We wanted this to be a kinder and gentler way to learn how to do this stuff. We don't want it to feel like 'and now I'm getting attacked!' During their presentation, the Tri-House team drops in numbers about the potential market, the growth of the industry and how many networks and social media platforms are scrambling to produce VR content. The competition's judges a mix of investors, brand strategists, and designers found the concept intriguing. But venture capitalist Tracy McWilliams pressed them, Why this direction? Because the market is there and waiting, Fredrick responded. We're content creators and we got this new technology and all you get is 360[-degree] room tours. That's not what we thought we were going to get. The five judge panel included Ryan Germick, of Google, Robbie Nock, of the ArtCenter College of Design, Tracy McWilliams, of Heritage Capital Ventures, strategist Amy Amsterdam, and John Underkoffler, of Oblong Industries. Priska Neely/KPCC The judges then spent about 20 minutes probing the group with questions about their vision and giving the group suggestions on how to better shape their idea. We are passionate about making sure that the form and function fit together, Griffith said as the presentation wrapped up. We would think more hopefully during the incubator to really hone in on specific ways that VR can augment the experience. Over the course of the Saturday, they heard a wide-range of pitches, ranging from an India-based, eco-friendly handbag business, to an experimental design studio.Tri-House was the last to pitch and afterwards the judges left to deliberate. The pitch competition is one of the new offerings of a recently beefed-up career services department at CalArts. Previously, students have relied on academic advisors to offer life planning and career advice. Soultanian was charged with creating a central resource for career guidance at the university. Survey results from 2015 show that while 71 percent of arts alumni indicated entrepreneurial skills were important to their work life, only 26 percent reported their institution helped them develop entrepreneurial skills. That SNAAP survey shed a lot of light onto art and design schools, said Soultanian. A lot of us are very strong in delivering techniques and methodologies for artists, but students were really eager to gain more by way of professional skill sets and gain entrepreneurship skills. Last year, CalArts launched the Hybrid Incubator of Visionary Entrepreneurs, also known as the HIVE a new initiative in the career services branch of the school. Pairing business skills with design thinking, the HIVE offers seminars to students throughout the year on the how-to's of launching an organization, raising funds, social media marketing and more all culminating in the pitch competition. I went to art school, so I'm very familiar with the critique environment, said contest judge Ryan Germick, a principal designer at Google who leads the team behind the Google Doodle. And I'm a citizen of Silicon Valley, so to combine those worlds is really interesting. Several arts schools, including the Rhode Island School of Design,Maryland Institute College of Art and Pratt Institute, have also developed more intensive career services programs in recent years.Germick said he's glad to see more opportunities for arts students to develop business skills before graduation. That was always the frustration I had in art school, said Germick, was people would learn the craft but not learn how to say something and how to connect with an audience. As the judges deliberated, the teams paced around nervously reflecting on presentations and hesitantly mingling with other groups. As he waited, Griffith realized he'd already taken away a useful lesson for his production company. They helped me frame it in a way that's like it's a code to crack I didn't think of it in that way, he said. It's like we need to be the ones to figure out how to make comedy work for VR. After about 30 minutes, the judges returned and announced that four teams, including Tri-House Productions, would receive the cash prizes and incubator spots. The comedians were thrilled to have the chance to experiment with virtual reality technology. And Griffith squeezed in one more joke, We're going to crack the code, like Nicholas Cage in a National Treasure movie.
Members of Senates investigation say Flynn is testing his limits by ignoring their requests to turn over documents, and warn he risks being held in contempt
Congressional investigators on Tuesday issued a fresh warning to Michael Flynn to turn over documents pertaining to the investigation of Russian interference in the US election, escalating pressure on Donald Trumps former national security adviser to either comply or risk being held in contempt. Leaders of the Senate intelligence committee, which is overseeing one of the three separate inquiries into potential ties between Trumps campaign and Moscow, announced two new subpoenas for Flynns business records a day after he rejected earlier requests for documents by invoking his fifth amendment right against self-incrimination. Senators Richard Burr and Mark Warner, the top Republican and Democrat on the panel, told reporters on Capitol Hill they were considering all options available to compel Flynns cooperation with their investigation. Among the possibilities, the senators acknowledged, was to hold Flynn in contempt of Congress, a criminal charge, if he continued down the path of refusing compliance. The end of that option is a contempt charge, Burr said. Thats not our preference today. We would like to hear from Gen Flynn. Wed like to see his documents, wed like him to tell his story because he publicly said, Ive got a story to tell, Burr added. Were allowing him that opportunity.
May 23, 2017
Burr and Warner said Tuesday that they also sent a letter to Flynns attorney seeking the legal rationale for his refusal to comply with their investigation. Flynns attorney did not immediately return a request for comment. Flynn has ignored several subpoena requests in relation to the three inquiries, even as his role in the complicated web of communications between Russia and associates of Trump has been compounded by recent reports suggesting the president urged ousted FBI director James Comey and intelligence community to back off its investigation of Flynn. Adding to Flynns legal woes was a letter released Monday by the top Democrat on the House oversight committee accusing him of misleading Pentagon investigators about payments he received from companies in Russia and his contacts with officials in Moscow while seeking a renewal of his top-secret security clearance last year. Flynn had already failed to disclose income from Russia amounting to tens of thousands of dollars while applying for clearance to work in the Trump White House. Intentionally misleading federal investigators is a felony charge that could result in possible jail time.
